Hole 15 | Par 4 Blue: 450 | White: 397 | Red: 369 Hole Description. The 15th hole is one of the strongest holes at Royal Palm. At 420 yards, this par 4 needs length and accuracy if you are to escape with a respectful score. The huge lake that dissects the fairway from the tee needs a firm hit of 220 yards just to find dry land. Even after a good drive, the contoured fairway makes sure that you will rarely have a flat lie. Water on the right will come into play from the tee for long balls hit 280 yards to the right. The approach to the green is no more inviting than the tee shot. The green sits above the level of the fairway and only offers a narrow entrance. A ball hit a fraction left of the green will either find a very deep bunker or water. The slope left of the green is extremely punishing and will without doubt pull the ball into major trouble. Shots hit short can be gathered back down the fairway due to the steady climb from the fairway to the front edge of the green. The front of the putting surface is protected by two tall contours either side. This makes putting judgment very difficult. The Pro’s Way:- If you select the driver, be aware that the just off the right side fairway lies water that is out of sight from the tee. A ball hit up the left side will lie very awkwardly due to the sloping fairway. The ideal line with the driver is down the right side of the fairway, but of course this will bring the water into play. A 3 wood would be the safest shot to take the lake from play and to stay short of the contoured fairway. A shot of 250 yards will leave a long uphill approach of 170 yards. The approach requires pin point accuracy to avoid the water on the left side. If you manage to hit the driver in the perfect spot, then a mid iron will reach the green with greater control. Yet another risk and reward decision to make on this demanding golf course. The Amateurs Way:- The first obstacle on this difficult hole is the 220 yards of carry needed to clear the water. As usual thick rough will punish a wayward ball so the pressure is immediately on. A successful drive of 240 yards anywhere on the fairway, will leave a long and dangerous approach to the green. 180 yards with huge danger to the left is the shot that you are faced. If you risk a long iron or fairway wood, the only option is straight. Water and sand on the left, rough and bushes on the right. It would be wise to lay up with a wedge to take out all the costly trouble. The lay up will leave a steady pitch to the green where two putts will give you a well deserved bogey. A par 4 on this hole will put a smile on the face of even the best golfer. |
